As with Trump, Twitter Must Go

May 26, 2020 by Stephen Altschuler 6 Comments

If Twitter persists in allowing citizen Trump to use its giant media forum as his personal venue for lies, misrepresentations, bullying, conspiracy theories, encouragement to break the law, instigation to violence, and fake news, then Twitter’s license to operate should be revoked. The first amendment allows freedom of speech, but not without condition. For the most obvious, you cannot yell “fire” in a crowded place if there is no fire. And Trump figuratively yells fire when there is no fire. He is therefore a menace to society. His morals and scruples are warped. He lies compulsively. He deceives. He distorts. He accuses. He demands. He threatens. He obfuscates. He bloviates. He bullies. He shames. He calls people names as a tween might in a junior high schoolyard at lunchtime.

Donald Trump is an embarrassment to this country. He has not made this country great again as he and his followers profess. Indeed, they fit the definition of a cult–a cult of narcissists–allowing the Narcissist in Chief free rein to spread his lies and narcissistic blarney. He has made America aggressive and vindictive. Other countries laugh at us, and avoid our counsel, as he abandons treaty after helpful treaty.

And yet, Twitter gives him a forum, almost carte blanche( finally the media giant pinned a warning to one of his tweets that claimed mail-in ballots were illegal–a warning that directed his followers to an informational site showing that the claim was false). No restrictions. No rules, save the number of characters. No penalties. No standards. Twitter has allowed Trump’s inner monster to surface. Based in SF, the company has given tacit approval to Trump’s behavior. Rather than hate SF, and what he says it stands for, he should come to the City by the Bay and kiss the ground that Twitter stands on–the company that has opened the door to the world for his venom and hatred.

And now, observe the wannabe dictator during the worst pandemic in this country’s history. He claimed it a hoax early on and practically laughed it off, like Brazil’s Bolsonaro still does–another wannabe dictator who uses Trump admitedly as his model and inspiration. And to deflect from his responsibility around the close to 100,000,000 American deaths, Trump attempts to lay the blame wherever Twitter allows him to lay it. China. Europe. The Democrats. Former President Obama. And his self-declared enemies–the accidental Furies of his paranoia and ignorance.

And Twitter drives the getaway car during and after each of Trump’s crimes against compassion, reason, and truth. Twitter is Trump’s accomplice before and after the fact. Twitter should take responsibility for allowing this charlatan, this snake oil salesman, this moron for parking his horse and wagon in the country’s town square and peddling his venal version of reality.

I appeal to the Federal Communication Commission, or whoever has the power to do so (is there such a regulatory government agency?), to shut Twitter down. Enough of their complicity in allowing Trump to tarnish the image of this great country. I’m sick of this traitor and his surrogates and enablers.

Thanks very much, Barb. And now, with this executive order Trump is readying, our democracy is in mortal danger of being smothered with evermore fake news. Please spread the word.
      Hope you’re well.

Thanks, my dear Stephen! It’s all just too much. I can barely read or watch the news any more. How does this moron get away with all that he gets away with?

It is truly demoralizing, Barb. How does he get away with it? It’s a kind of cult mentality, with followers on Main St., on Wall St., and in Congress. The saving Grace? Cults eventually fail and collapse under the weight of their own absurdity.
      Take care, my friend.
