After moving to the Bay Area in 1981, I discovered a network of pathways, trails, and stairways, true hidden walks, that fascinated me, satisfying my thirst for interesting walks near where I lived in Berkeley. The seed of this book was planted there in my early walks. I would see schoolchildren suddenly disappear while walking to school, apparently on shortcuts. Investigating further, I found they took off on hidden paths–paths that had been constructed in the early 20th century in the hillier sections of the East Bay and Marin. Diving into Planning Department maps, I stumbled upon dozens of these paths, most with the possibility of loop walks that wove past historic houses, lovely gardens, parks, and even wild areas within the older towns. I had uncovered the Holy Grail of urban walks, and my spirit, along with my feet, were most happy indeed.
